About

Netta Ewing

Studio Scholastica is the source for the work of Netta Ewing DA BEd ADF(Manc).  Netta is a Glasgow-based artist and designer.  An interior designer by profession, she is probably best known for her design of murals, vestments and church furnishings.

Many of her embroidery designs have been worked and constructed by the Sacred Threads Group, the Sacred Strands Group and the St. Stephen’s Embroiderers’ Guild. She has worked with George Smith, the prominent Glasgow metalworker, and her stained glass designs are constructed by Martin Farrelly of Aboyne. Past exhibition venues include the Whithorn Museum,  the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life, and the Oasis Centre.

Netta graduated in Interior Design and Craft at Glasgow School of Art where she was taught by Margaret Grant. After a period as an interior design consultant, she trained as a teacher and moved into art education. in 1980 she achieved distinctions in the City and Guilds Embroidery Certificate, which led to her being commissioned to design the vestments for the Scottish Papal Visit. Since then, she has designed many artefacts for churches of various denominations in Scotland and overseas. She has a profound interest in liturgy, and was an active member of the Design Team working on the refurbishment of St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Glasgow. She designed the colour schemes and painted decoration for the Cathedral and also designed the circular mosaic in the porch.

Throughout her teaching career, she has continued to draw, paint, and produce artworks in a variety of media, while founding and organising voluntary groups and running summer schools. She has a Bachelor of Education degree in tertiary education and an Art and Design Fellowship from Manchester University.

In 2009, Netta founded Artists for Mary’s Meals, a group of fundraisers dedicated to raising money for Mary’s Meals ( www.marysmeals.com ) by organising cultural events. They have raised enough money to build and equip school kitchens in the Zhombwe and Njera districts of Malawi and are well on the way to building a third.
